Onboard the train

Each train is made up of four carriages, each with a different interior layout. View the layout of each carriage here.

Some information at stations and on-board will be provided via audio and braille for those with impairments.

Wheelchair users

The train has space for up to two wheelchair users, with one carriage per train fitted with a wheelchair hoist. Wheelchair users will need to book a seat using our booking system, as there are only two available spaces on each train. The booking system will be in place closer to the launch of the service.

There is also an accessible toilet on board, in the café carriage where the wheelchair spaces are located.

Mobility scooters are not permitted due to the weight restrictions and available space within the carriage.

Service animals

Service animals such as guide dogs are welcome on board Te Huia. Please note leg room is larger in the cafe carriage so it may be more comfortable to sit in this carriage. For northbound services, this will be the second carriage and for southbound carriages, this will be the third carriage. Please make sure they have appropriate identification in case asked by the train manager.

Accessibility concession

Waikato Regional Council’s accessibility concession (free public transport for people with disabilities) is available for use on the train for those people with a photo ID smart card. The concession is only available for residents of the Waikato region. Please note that this concession only applies on the Te Huia service. A different accessibility concession is available in Auckland, but you will need to have an AT HOP card and apply for your concession to be added to it. Find out more here.

Familiarising yourself with the train and stations

We encourage everyone to familarise themselves with the train before travelling with us. This will ensure you feel confident about all aspects of the journey from boarding, using the facilities on board and disembarking at Papakura station. Visit our stations page for more information.
