Onboard the train

Te Huia is a fully accessible service onboard, however accessibility at each station may vary. Please read more about each station on the Stations page.

Braille, raised lettering and a hearing loop are available on board for those who require assistance.

Each train is made up of four carriages, each with a different interior layout. View the layout of each carriage here.

Accessible Stations

The following stations include accessible bathroom facilities:

  • Rotokauri, Hamilton
  • Papakura, Auckland
  • Raahui Pookeka | Huntly (New facilities coming end of 2024)
  • Puhinui, Auckland
  • The Strand, Auckland

Please note: The Strand is not a fully accessible station, with entry/exit required through a carpark with no separated pathway. The surface is uneven, with some uphill and downhill sections. Tactile paving is not prevalent in the area, and you will need to cross roads.

Wheelchair users

Wheelchair users will need to book a space using our booking system, as there are only two available spaces on each train.

The train manager will assist with boarding wheelchairs from the platform, as one carriage per train is fitted with a wheelchair hoist.

Wheelchairs are required to be secured safely in the wheelchair space for the duration of the journey.

The onboard bathroom is fully wheelchair accessible, near the onboard cafe.

Wheelchairs must be under 250kg in wieght and 70cm in width to travel onboard.

Mobility scooters are not permitted due to the weight and size restrictions and available space within the carriages.

Please carry the appripriate identification cards from recognised organisations with you when you travel. The train manager may ask for this upon boarding.

Please note: Leg room is larger in the cafe carriage so it may be more comfortable to sit in this carriage with your service animal.

Waikato Regional Council’s accessibility concession (free public transport for people with disabilities) is available for use on the train for those people with a verfied Bee Card. The concession is only available for residents of the Waikato region and an application process is required.
